  15. <p>     DIED. ALICE CHILDRESS, 73, actress and author of plays, screenplays
  16. and novels; of cancer; in New York City. A prolific chronicler
  17. of America's struggle to achieve racial justice, Childress wrote
  18. such memorable works as Trouble in Mind (1955), a play-within-a-play
  19. tracing the rebellion of a black theater troupe against a stereotype-laden
  20. work created by white artists; and Wedding Band (1966), an interracial
  21. love story sporadically banned in a TV version--a not uncommon
  22. fate for Childress's work. Her frank young-adult novel A Hero
  23. Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich (1973) remains a target of censors.
