- <p> DIED. ALICE CHILDRESS, 73, actress and author of plays, screenplays
- and novels; of cancer; in New York City. A prolific chronicler
- of America's struggle to achieve racial justice, Childress wrote
- such memorable works as Trouble in Mind (1955), a play-within-a-play
- tracing the rebellion of a black theater troupe against a stereotype-laden
- work created by white artists; and Wedding Band (1966), an interracial
- love story sporadically banned in a TV version--a not uncommon
- fate for Childress's work. Her frank young-adult novel A Hero
- Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich (1973) remains a target of censors.
